Charlie received a BA in Communication and Accounting from the University of Minnesota, Duluth and worked in non-profit business and financial management for a decade prior to completing his Master of Public Health (MPH) with an infectious disease specialty from the University of Minnesota. He transitioned to HIV vaccine research in 2010 and has extensive background in research infrastructure and clinical operations, including global multi-site clinical trials for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Before joining the University of Washington in 2016, Charlie directed a portfolio of investigator-initiated and network studies in LGBTQ+ health research at the Fenway Institute in Boston. At the UW Institute of Translational Health Sciences, he launched the first Trial Innovation Network hub and the Recruitment Support Service. In addition, he was the co-founder of the UW Diversity in Clinical Trials Initiative. In his leadership role at the CVI, Charlie supports the strategic expansion of the institute’s clinical trial portfolio, basic science capabilities, and multi-site partnerships.
