“That Is How Fast Science Has Moved”: Dr. Nora Disis Reflects on Changes in Cancer Immunology Research on Onc Now

Dr. Nora Disis, Director of the Cancer Vaccine Institute (CVI), recently joined Dr. Katherine Glass, host of the European Medical Journal’s (EMJ) Onc Now podcast, to discuss the evolving field of cancer vaccines and the future of immunotherapy. 

Dr. Disis shares how cancer vaccines work by training the immune system to recognize and target cancer cells, generating long-lasting immune responses that may help transform approaches to cancer treatment and prevention. She also highlights how advances in cancer vaccine research are bringing the field closer to new strategies for preventing cancer.

“I think today we’re at a tipping point for cancer vaccines,” Dr. Disis says.

Dr. Disis highlights the mission of the CVI to bring together scientists and clinicians to advance vaccines for cancer treatment and prevention, including breast, colon, prostate, ovarian, lung, and bladder cancers. Looking ahead, Dr. Disis emphasizes the need to accelerate cancer vaccine research, expand understanding of immunology, and develop more effective combinations of immune-based therapies to improve outcomes for patients.
